Peter Constantine's talk was really interesting! We've talked a bit in the class about translating across time, but it was cool to see it from the perspective of an older translator translating a child author. I thought the phrases written by the younger editor read a little awkwardly most of the time, I actually really wasn't fond of a few of them. I did like when he talked about hyperlocalized dialect and translating across time in respects to that, and how you have to work with certain implications that may or may not be there in the original but would definitely be there in the translated version if translated literally.
The part in Carlos Rojas' reading about what defines literature really resonated--when I took Korean Literature with Professor Yang last year, one of the first things she made us do was try to define what Korean literature is, and none of us could come up with a good, all-encompassing definition.
